Discounts for Shepherd and more at University Athletic Club

The University Athletic Club in the Riverplace Tower offers more than the usual amenities and packages. During my personal tour, I found the equipment well kept, encountered friendly, approachable staff, and was impressed with the large number of available group exercise classes.

Located on Concourse C, adjacent to the cafeteria, in the rear of the building, the club is well lit, with natural sunlight and windows that offer a gorgeous view of the St. Johns River. Members have access to the locker room and towel and laundry service. While you work out, a staff member can wash, dry and return your clothes to your locker. Massages are reasonably priced, but you get a better deal when you buy a package. Sessions range from 30 minutes to one hour.

As a manager at the Brooks YMCA for more than two years, I’m pretty familiar with sports complexes, exercise programs and equipment. Although the University Athletic Club may not be as big as a YMCA, it’s packed with quality equipment and cardio machines. They even offer TRX suspension training, Zumba and boot camp style classes.  I was surprised to learn it offers 15 group exercise classes throughout the week that are included in your membership. Many health facilities charge extra for group fitness classes. There is a rotating, daily schedule of classes starting at 6:15a.m., Monday through Friday. They also offer spin classes, yoga and cardio driven, “wildcard” sessions. With the “wildcard” program, the instructor has the freedom to address class participants’ specific goals. Group exercise classes are small and intimate compared to other larger facilities, which makes for a more personal, helpful experience. For a class schedule, look below.

But the club’s best offering is the discount membership rate for Shepherd. Membership is normally $43 per month, plus a one-time $45 enrollment fee, but the club is offering Shepherdites a discounted monthly rate of $37 and waiving the sign-up fee. Such a deal! As a comparison, the Brooks YMCA offers a single adult membership for $63 dollars a month, with a $60 dollar sign-up fee. The discounts available could be the tipping point if you’re on the fence about spending extra money. There are even platters with fruit and snacks available to members to snack on while on site. All of these features add up to make for a wonderful workout experience.

These are the only machines that require you to rack your weights. Many of the other machines use air pressure machines to create resistance. All you have to do is dial in the weight you want and do your repetitions. No clinking plates!
